6 dead, 16 rescued -storey building collapses in Lagos

Tragedy struck again in Lagos, yesterday, when a four-storey building at 3, Massey Street, Lagos Island, suddenly collapsed, with 14 persons rescued alive, while many were still trapped at press time.

The incident was said to have occurred at about 3p.m., with rescue operators battling to rescue the trapped victims among who were children, from the debris.

Among the dead victims also, included, 11 year old boy whose body was recovered at about midnight.

According vanguard, an eyewitness said the building came down totally, at about 2.43 pm during rainstorm. Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, General Manager, Mr. Adeshina Tiamiyu, who confirmed the incident said recovery operation were on going by LASEMA Response Unit, NEMA, LASAMBUS, Lagos State Fire Service and other rescue team to save the lives of possible trapped victims. According to Tiamiyu, heavy duty equipment presently searching through the rubble. Tiamiyu said: “We have deployed heavy duty to the scene to search through the rubble to ensure no one is left under.”

Source told our correspondent that the structure was initially on a three-storey building before another one storey was added making it four Also confirming the tragedy, Director of Lagos state fire service, Mr. Rasak Fadipe, said that 13 persons have been rescued, noting that efforts were still ongoing to rescue others feared trapped under the rubble.
