The buglers stole various items including huge sums of money and electrical appliances.
The theft came just as mobile policemen attached to the Government House, “acting on the orders from above,” harassed and prevented journalists from seeing Governor Samuel Ortom to get his reaction on the incident. But an official of the Government House, who preferred anonymity, told journalists said a man who works in the Maintenance Department was privy to the theft.
“I have questioned him on several occasions when he comes to office with a strange face and his response has always been that the person is his brother who covers for him.
“At a point, it was discovered that several electrical appliances, including television sets at the guest houses and at the reception inside the main Government House were missing.
Also, car batteries as well as generator batteries have been disappearing,” the official said.
According to him, at the weekend, the suspect and his gang members burgled the residence of Chief Detail to the governor and stole over N75,000 and two mobile phones belonging to wife of the Chief Detail. He said the burglars pulled out the air conditioner and used an instrument to remove the money and phones.
This is the second time thieves bugled the Government House, Makurdi.
The first was during the administration of the immediate past Governor Gabriel Suswam. Then, the thieves broke into the office of the accountant and stole N2.5 million in a safe.
The safe was reported to have been recovered from River Benue. When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Moses Yamu, said the matter was not reported to his office.
